Clare Mateke was born in Lusaka, Zambia, but has lived most of her life in Livingstone. Although she has loved drawing since childhood, she has had no formal art training. Encouraged by fellow artists Clare took up art seriously in 2006.
Having previously experimented with pencil, pen and watercolour, she started painting with acrylics and found she really enjoyed it, and has since participated in a number of exhibitions in Livingstone and Lusaka.
Clare works as a biologist and much of her artwork, which she does in her spare time, is inspired by her love of wildlife and nature. Apart from painting birds and other animals, she also does portraits and landscapes.
