OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE GALLERY
The concept of having a purpose-built art gallery in Livingstone was conceived by the Zambia National Visual Arts Council in 1992. Between 2004 and 2005, a small structure was constructed on the current premises to cater for artists in residency programmes. Part of the structure was later modified to act as exhibition space but it was not adequate to render the required artistic services.
In 2012, preparatory meetings to co-host the 20th session of UNWTO General Assembly began and it was in one of these meetings that the National Arts Council of Zambia proposed that among the structures to be constructed as a legacy for the conference should be an art gallery.
Construction of this first Government built art gallery was completed and handed over to the National Arts Council of Zambia on 21st August 2014. The facility was officially commissioned by the Minister of Tourism and Arts, Honourable Jean Kapata M.P. on 16th October 2014. It was a colourful event with entertainment from the National Dance Troupe and attended by over a hundred invited guests.
